Who we help

If you own a small to mid-sized agency (marketing, advertising, PR, media, SEO, PPC, web dev, etc.) with 0-200 employees and are actively running the business day to day -- we serve you. Agency Management Institute (AMI) was built in the late 90s on a simple premise -- most agency owners are accidental business owners. Odds are you spent most of your professional career in an agency and somehow along the way, you ended up owning one! If you're like most agency owners, you're brilliant at the client facing part of agency ownership but the behind the scenes side (financials, HR, biz dev, growing the team, etc.) are not what you built your career on or studied in school.  You've been figuring it out through trial and error and you're doing okay, but you're tired of reinventing the wheel and going it alone.  There has to be a better way or some agency best practices that will help you make all of this easier and more profitable. AMI is here to help you make more money and keep more of what you make.  There absolutely are best practices that will help you build a agency that is more scalable, sustainable and if you want to down the road, sellable. We have resources specifically for you, the agency owner and we also have resources to help you train and grow your employees. Beyond that -- we will help you realize you don't have to do this alone.  You can find a community of collaborative, supportive agency owners who will become your advisors, your confidantes, your friends and your cheerleaders. If you can't find what you're looking for -- please ask.  We're here to help you build [...]

Memberships

At Agency Management Institute we know that running an agency (whether it's an ad agency, media buying shop, PR firm, digital shop, web dev, or marketing agency) can be a little lonely.  Most agency owners are accidental business owners.  You were amazing at some aspect of agency life (account service, creative, etc.) and one day you decided to go out on your own. You got busy and pretty soon you needed to  hire some help. Next thing you know, you've got five employees and you are running a business. Many agency owners go it alone for years, running their business by the seat of their pants, instincts and a little good fortune. For awhile, that works just fine. You're smart, committed to doing good work and taking care of your clients. But at some point, it feels like you're stuck in place. You can't pay yourself what you know you should and growing is getting harder. That's usually the moment that agency owners reach out to us. They're tired of trying to figure it out on their own. What they discover is that having a peer group of agency owners who get their worries, hopes and struggles becomes a lifeline they come to rely on.  Many of our network members have been a part of AMI for over 20 years and the group is as valuable to them as ever. What they'd tell you is that their peer group serves as their unofficial board of directors, sounding board, and the people they call on those days that they'd sell the agency for a quarter. Equally important - the network members are the ones who genuinely celebrate your big wins and break throughs. We offer two [...]

Research 2024

2024: Getting hired in 2024 - new insights to help agencies get found, hired, and retained Over a decade into our Agency Edge Research Series, we’ve consistently provided small to midsized marketing and advertising agencies with critical insights into our industry. As agencies have faced a bevy of challenges in the last few years—the COVID-19 pandemic, economic headwinds, and rapidly fluctuating employment conditions—it has become more important than ever to find the key to unlocking lucrative client relationships. In 2024, we decided to take stock of client mindsets after this period of great change, revisiting our attitudinal segmentation from our 2014 and 2019 agency client research with a focus on business development. Not only does this research show agencies how prospects are thinking today, but because we have asked some of these questions over the past decade, we can look at the evolution of business development, from the prospects’ point of view. What prompts an organization to decide to hire an agency or replace the one they have? How do they go about that search? Where/how do they find the agencies that they put into the consideration set? What factors influence their decision more than others? What, if anything, would speed up their process? What the heck is their process and how do they manage it In addition to reports from our previous studies, you can review the foundational research that informed this year’s study for free through our website. In this report, we’ll share what we’ve learned and what you need to know to reach your right-fit clients in 2024. As you read through this report, we’ll answer questions like: How have clients’ attitudes changed since we first asked for their perspectives on [...]
