Sometimes we are in such a hurry to get the work done. And especially today, because everything is so computerized, we’re not sitting down with clients anymore to present work. We’re just emailing it over to them.

We’ve lost the art of sort of beautifying our world and our work. And I think there’s a lost art to making something tantalizing to look at or to open or to feel like somebody went a little extra just because just for the effort of making something beautiful.

As you think about how you present your work to clients, how you mail things to clients, how you show up, even how you do it for your employees, it’s not just for our clients, but are there ways that you can really kind of beautify your work and the way you present yourself, the way you present the agency? Can you find little moments where you can create something special that makes someone feel like they were important enough to you for you to go that little extra mile?

Bonjour!
Je m'appelle Drew McLellan
from Agency Management Institute.
That's all the French I know, really.
This week, coming to you again from Paris, France.
You know, we've been here now about a week
and one of the things that has struck me
about Parisians and Paris
is they go out of their way
to find little places to add beauty.
So I'm going to show you,
I'm going to turn the camera.
Look at this sort of little piece of art
on the wall behind me.
So that's actually a painted piece of art
that is on a wall
that, you know,
I'm in a lot of hotel rooms
and they don't usually take the time
to paint anything on the wall.
Yes, they'll hang some pictures.
But all through this hotel,
there is this motif, this sort of floral motif
in the hallways, in the rooms,
down in the lobby.
And it's really just a lovely little piece of art
that ties everything together.
But the point I'm making
is not that you have to have a floral piece of art
that ties things together,
but I think sometimes we are in such a hurry
to get the work done.
And especially today,
because everything is so computerized,
we're not sitting down with clients anymore
to present work,
we're just emailing it over to them,
we've lost the art of sort of beautifying
our world and our work.
And I think there's a lost art
to making something
tantalizing to look at or to open
or to feel like somebody went a little extra
just because,
just for the effort of making something beautiful.
And so as you think about
how you present your work to clients,
how you mail things to clients,
how you show up,
even how you do it for your employees,
it's not just for our clients,
but are there ways that you can really kind of beautify
your work and the way you present yourself,
the way you present the agency?
Can you find little moments
where you can create something special
that makes someone feel like
they were important enough to you
for you to go that little extra mile?
It's been really a lovely reminder
as we have traveled through Paris.
Everywhere we could look,
they just go out of their way
to make things pretty
and to make them visually interesting.
And I think we could do a little more of that.
We used to do a lot more of it back in the day,
but I think that a lot of that has been lost
in the translation pre-COVID,
just from sort of paper and pen to computer.
And now with you have spending even less time
in an office, in face-to-face meetings
with clients, with our own team members,
I think we've sort of lost the art
of making something feel special
or magical or beautiful.
So, just wanted to put that thought into your head.
Maybe there's some places
you can put some little speckles of beauty
into your work and into your world
and into the world of your employees and your clients.
All right?
I'll see you next week!
